Wide Chess is regular chess with extra space: 8 rows and 12 columns. Play a friend in a room, or take on the computer.

What this game is

If you know chess, you already know how to play. Pieces move the same way. Checks, captures, castling, en passant, and promotion all work as usual.

The board is just wider. Files run from A to L. Each side has extra knights and bishops, and a full row of 12 pawns. The king still starts on G, next to the queen on F.

You do not need an account. Create a room, pick a clock (or play with no timer), and share. Choose White, Black, or random. Anyone else can watch.

How to start

Three steps. No signup.

1. Create a room

Choose a time control like 3+2, 10+0, or unlimited, and pick your color. You get a private link plus a 4-character code.

2. Invite a friend

The invite link is copied for you. When they join, they add their name and sit on the other side. The clock starts then.

3. Play and rematch

Moves update live. You can offer a draw. After checkmate, stalemate, resign, timeout, or a draw, rematch in the same room.

The starting lineup

Ranks 1–8 stay the same. Columns go A–L. Back rank from left to right:

Then 12 pawns. Castling still moves the king two squares: toward L on the kingside, toward A on the queenside. That extra width gives knights and bishops more room to work, so games feel open from the first moves.

Clocks, if you want them

You can play with no timer, or pick a Chess.com-style control: minutes for each side, plus an increment after every move. Bullet, blitz, rapid, and classical presets are there, and you can type your own numbers.

The clock waits until both players are in the room. If someone runs out of time, the other side wins, and you can rematch with the same settings.
